Ceiling Fan Buying Guide Singapore
Choosing a ceiling fan is mainly about matching the fan to the room, ceiling height, mounting conditions and lighting needs. This guide gives you a practical starting point before comparing models in store.
1. Measure the room
Measure the room length and width to estimate the floor area. Fan size should be considered together with blade clearance from walls, cabinets, L-boxes and other nearby fixtures.
2. Check ceiling height
For lower ceilings, a hugger or low-profile fan may be more suitable. For higher ceilings, a downrod may be needed so the fan operates at a practical height.
3. Match fan size to room size
Crestar's current Singapore buying guide recommends approximately:
- Up to 10 sqm: around 33–42 inch fans
- 10–15 sqm: around 42–50 inch fans
- 15–40 sqm: around 48–56 inch fans
These are general manufacturer guidelines, not a substitute for checking the actual room layout and clearance requirements.
4. Check blade clearance
Crestar currently recommends roughly 45–60 cm of clearance around the fan depending on room and fan size. Built-in cabinetry, L-boxes and lighting fixtures can affect the usable fan diameter.
5. Decide whether you need a light
If the room depends on one central point for both airflow and lighting, a ceiling fan with an integrated LED may be practical. If the room already has sufficient downlights or ambient lighting, a fan without a light can keep the ceiling visually simpler.
6. Compare controls
Depending on the model, you may see remote control, app control, Wi-Fi control, reversible airflow, natural-wind modes or multiple speed settings. Check the exact model specification rather than assuming every fan from the same brand has the same features.
Examples from current brands
- KDK: compact and larger DC ceiling-fan options, including U48FP and U60FW
- Crestar: multiple 3-blade and 5-blade sizes, smart models and optional LED options
- Point One: multiple high-performance smart fan configurations
- Fanco: ceiling, hugger and wall-fan options
Before installation
Confirm ceiling material, ceiling height, existing electrical point, fan position and whether reinforcement or additional wiring is needed. Installation requirements can vary significantly between concrete and false ceilings.
