How to Measure for a Toilet Bowl in Singapore

How to Measure for a Toilet Bowl in Singapore

Before replacing a toilet bowl, the most important checks are the outlet type, rough-in distance and the physical space available in the bathroom. Measuring these before ordering helps reduce installation problems.

S-trap vs P-trap

A Singapore BCA reference describes an S-trap WC as a vertical outlet system that passes through the floor slab, while a P-trap is a horizontal or wall-outlet system.

How to identify an S-trap

If the waste outlet goes into the floor, the toilet is generally an S-trap configuration. Many floor-mounted toilets sold in Singapore use S-trap specifications, but the exact rough-in still needs to match your site.

How to identify a P-trap

If the waste outlet goes horizontally into the wall, it is generally a P-trap configuration. P-trap dimensions and wall outlet height must match the selected toilet and installation setup.

How to measure S-trap rough-in

For a floor outlet, measure from the finished wall behind the toilet to the centre of the waste outlet in the floor. Do not measure from the skirting board unless the skirting is flush with the wall and you have accounted for its thickness.

Why the measurement matters

Different toilet models can require different rough-in dimensions. For example, American Standard Singapore currently lists some S-trap models with a 305 mm minimum rough-in, while other models are offered around 150/250 mm configurations. Always check the exact technical sheet for the model you plan to buy.

Other dimensions to check

  • Overall toilet length from wall to front edge
  • Toilet width
  • Door swing and walkway clearance
  • Water inlet position
  • Bidet spray or accessory clearance
  • Any boxed-up pipework behind or beside the toilet

What to send us if you are unsure

Send the toilet model you are considering together with photos of the existing toilet, the wall behind it, the floor outlet area where visible, and your wall-to-centre measurement. An on-site check may still be required when the installation condition is unclear.
